COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 

PRESCHOOL MUSIC

Music is vital for the development of a young learner. In our Preschool Music course, students learn how sounds are produced by playing musical instruments, speaking, and singing. They also explore music through movement and the expressions associated with movement. A wide range of learning opportunities boosts language skills, confidence, independence, social-emotional skills, and self-control.​

 

LOWER SCHOOL GENERAL MUSIC

This General Music course teaches students about the “ingredients” of music such as melody, harmony, notation, texture, style, rhythm and form.  Students will explore the basics of music as well as sing, perform on classroom instruments, and listen to various examples of music from around the world. Music from several time periods are represented during the course and music literacy is taught.

 

LOWER SCHOOL BAND

The beginning band program at Christian School of York is designed for first and second-year players in Grades 4 and 5. Instruction is offered on flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. Students meet in a small group 30-minute lesson each week. Throughout lessons and rehearsals, students are expected to perform with a sense of tone, breath support, intonation, rhythm, harmony, and articulation. This is a year-long course. MARCHING BAND

In the fall, Upper School and Middle School Band students are required to play in the “Christian School of York Marching Crusaders” Marching Band. This ensemble allows the students to learn a different repertoire of music all while sharing with our community as they represent the school in local parades and sporting events. Band Camp is held in July to prepare the students for the Fall events. Travel forms will be distributed and collected for Band members. MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND

Middle School Band emphasizes the practicing and performing of various styles of music such as hymns, traditional band repertoire, popular tunes, and marches. Music is treated as a gift from God and we should use our talents to bring honor to Him. The band program is twofold, consisting of sectional rehearsals and band rehearsals. Knowledge of a band instrument and reading music are preferred. Travel forms will be distributed and collected for Band members. This is a year-long course. Choir students will learn to use their vocal instrument to create a correct and pleasing singing sound.  In addition to learning proper vocal production and technique, students will also learn music reading skills, sight-singing skills, and performance skills.  Chorus also offers opportunities for students to develop team building and leadership skills. This is a performance-based class.  Participation in concert performances outside of regular class hours is required. Travel forms will be distributed and collected for Choir members. UPPER SCHOOL CHOIR

This is a year-long course that explores choral music from a wide variety of cultures and time periods through study and performance.  The core curriculum emphasizes the basics of vocal technique, sight-reading, music theory, and music history.  Musical opportunities are provided for every child to learn the basic skills of singing and reading music, developing song repertoire, broadening listening skills and experiencing the interrelated nature of music with other cultures and content areas. The topics in this class will provide a strong basis for the continuation of their music skills as high school age children continue on their path to becoming a life-long participant of music. This is a year-long course. Participation in performances outside of regular class hours is required. Travel forms will be distributed and collected for Choir members. HONORS CHOIR

Students in Honors Choir are required to be an active member of the Upper School Choir. An audition is required for all potential candidates for this select ensemble. Honors Choir focuses on advanced choral literature. This ensemble meets once a week during flex period. This is a year-long course. Travel forms will be distributed and collected for Choir members. PRAISE TEAM

Praise Team is designed to give students an opportunity to lead Worship together during Chapel. This group also gives students guidance on how an ensemble leads Worship for a body of believers. Experience singing and/or playing a Praise Team instrument is required. An audition is required for this group. This is a year-long commitment. FACULTY

 

Jonathan de Salis – Lower School Music, Choir

 

Jonathan de Salis was born and raised in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He attended the West Chester University of Pennsylvania and holds a Bachelors of Music in Music Education with a concentration in voice. While attending West Chester University, Jonathan participated in

several music ensembles including the Mastersingers, Concert Choir, and the West Chester University Incomparable Golden Ram Marching Band. He also served in campus ministry where he led Bible Studies and assisted in organizing campus-wide worship events. Jonathan and his wife, Ashley, were married in 2016 and live in Adams County. Additionally, they serve in ministry at Hanover Community Church.

 

At Christian School of York, Jonathan is the Instrumental Music teacher for Elementary, Middle, and High School students. He is also the Sound Technician for the school.

Jayne Warner – Preschool/Lower School Music

 

Jayne Warner is a graduate of Liberty University and has over 25 years of experience in directing children’s choirs. She and her husband, Steve, have been married for 35 years. Jayne enjoys all things musical, reading, backpacking the Appalachian Trail, and spending time with her four children and grandchildren.

At Christian School of York, Jayne is the Preschool and Elementary Music teacher.

Derek Sandstrom – Director of Choirs

 

Derek Sandstrom is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and currently holds a Master’s Degree. He has experience in a vast array of musical settings. Derek is a singer, songwriter, composer, arranger, instrumentalist, teacher, and overall lover of music. Derek, his wife Sheri, and family live in Central Pennsylvania between Harrisburg and York.

At Christian School of York, Derek is the Director for Middle School and High School Choirs. He also supervises the Praise Team.

STUDIO ART (Art I pre-requisite)

Students electing this course display an interest in developing their God-given talent to its highest potential. They are open to the development of a Christian worldview as it relates to their own work as well as using God’s Word as their measure to make assessments about major periods in art history, major artists, and their artwork.  Studio Art is an elective course for advanced, highly able and/or motivated students.  Throughout the course, students are encouraged to analyze consistently personal work and the work of others in order to develop new abilities and understandings.  Students should be able to handle the concept of communication of ideas within their artwork. Areas of concentration include drawing, painting, sculpture, and crafts.  The prerequisite for this course is at least one year of Art I.  Students in Studio art will attend the ACSI Fine Arts Festival in the spring as well as create their own exhibition for Fine Arts Night.

David Bubb – Lower & Middle School Art

 

Mr. Bubb is a graduate of York College of Pennsylvania and has worked in the arts for the past 20 years.  With a passion for developing students’ God-given abilities, he is currently in his 9th year of teaching at CSY.  He has worked as a scenic artist for Sight & Sound Theatres, & has completed numerous large-scale murals in local homes, businesses, restaurants, and churches.  He has served as scenic designer/artist for numerous CSY musicals as well as for other local schools, universities, as well as for numerous national touring productions.

Mr. Bubb also owns his own painting business, ReGenesis Painting.

He is married to his beautiful wife, Christine, with whom he has three equally beautiful little girls.

Alyssa Daugherty – Upper School Art

 

Alyssa Daugherty is a graduate of Millersville University and has BSE in Art Education.  While at Millersville, Alyssa focused in ceramics and photography.  Several of her work has been showcased at the university and in local galleries in Lancaster, PA.  This is her ninth year teaching at CSY. 

Alyssa enjoys serving at her church, baking, painting, and spending time with her family.  She and her husband, Chris, have been married for ten years and have three wonderful children together.

CSY's Fine Arts Festival on Saturday, April 27th from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm around Campus and in the CSY Gymnasium.

 

There will be Student Art Displays, Music Performances (K-12), Family Interactive Art Activities, Music Making Opportunities for the Public - plus there will be Food Trucks on site! More details will be sent out closer to the event. Freewill offerings will be taken.
